Elevator aptitude test

Free EIAT practice test

This free EIAT practice test has the EIAT's published question counts: 100 in all, with Reading Comprehension 35, Mechanical Aptitude 35 and Mathematics 30. Each part has its own clock, 90 minutes in all. The National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) gives no time limit in its study guide or FAQ, so the times are ours. Every question has a worked answer.

No account and no email. Your answers stay on your device, and we don't collect them. If you close or reload this page before you finish all three parts, your answers are lost and the test starts again at the first part. The clock keeps running if you switch apps, so keep 90 minutes free.

How the free test works

This is a full-length practice test for the elevator aptitude test: three parts, one after another, in the order NEIEP's study guide lists them. The question counts are NEIEP's. The times are ours: NEIEP's 2024 study guide and its FAQ give no time limit for the EIAT, so we set them ourselves.

Reading has four choices and mechanical three, as in NEIEP's samples. Every math question here ends with No answer, because in NEIEP's three math samples, each question has five choices and the last is "No answer". "No answer" means none of the other choices is right. Our answers are exact, so a choice that is only close to your result is wrong.

NEIEP's 2024 study guide and its FAQ give no calculator rule. Our practice allows none, so keep a pencil and scrap paper next to you. There is no break between parts. Each part's clock starts only when you press its Start button, so start the next part right away to practice like one sitting. If your test letter gives other times, those are the ones that count on the day.

Take it in one sitting if you can. A short quiz can't show how your focus holds up over the full 90 minutes.

On the test screen

  • One question at a time. The question map lets you jump to any question in the part.
  • Flag a question to come back to it before the part ends.
  • Hide the timer if the clock makes you rush. It shows again for the last 5 minutes.
  • In reading, the passage shows above the question. Hide passage folds it away, and Show passage brings it back.
  • Once you finish a part, you can't go back to it.
  • When a part's clock reaches zero, the part ends, and the answers you marked so far are scored. You see your scores when all three parts are done.
  • Answer every question. A blank is never right.

  1. Filling out your time sheet

On many jobs, your pay comes from a weekly time sheet. Each day you write down when you started, when you stopped, and which job you worked on. It is best to fill it in at the end of every blank 1. If you wait until Friday, you may blank 2 the times from Monday and guess wrong. Write neatly, blank 3 someone in the office has to read your numbers. A messy 7 can look like a 1, and that mistake could cost you six hours of blank 4. At the end of the week, sign the sheet and give it to your foreman. blank 5 you hand it in, take a photo of it, so you have your own copy if a question comes up later.

  7. What yeast does in bread

Bread dough rises because of yeast, a tiny living thing. When yeast is mixed with flour, water and a little sugar, it feeds on the sugar and gives off a gas. The gas makes small blank 1 that get trapped in the sticky dough, so the dough slowly puffs up. Yeast works best when it is warm. In a cold kitchen, the dough rises much more blank 2. blank 3, water that is too hot will kill the yeast. Dead yeast makes no gas, so the dough never blank 4. A good loaf keeps the holes left by the gas as it bakes, blank 5 a slice of it feels soft and light.

  13. Riding the city bus

Riding a city bus for the first time is easier with a little planning. Most bus systems have an app or a website that shows every route and when each bus arrives. Look up your stop and the number of your bus before you leave home. Get to the stop a few minutes early, blank 1 buses sometimes run ahead of schedule. When a bus pulls up, check that the number on its front sign blank 2 the one you looked up. Have the exact fare ready, since many drivers cannot make blank 3. The seats near the front are blank 4 for older riders and people with disabilities. If you sit there, be ready to move when one of them gets on. About a block before your stop, pull the cord or press the strip by the window. blank 5, the driver may drive right past your stop.

  19. How elevator ropes are checked

The steel ropes that hold an elevator car look like solid cables. In fact, each one is made of many thin wires. The wires are twisted into strands, and the strands are twisted around a center core. This design makes a rope blank 1 enough to bend over a wheel many times a day without snapping. Even so, no rope lasts forever. Each time it runs over the wheel, the outer wires rub and blank 2. Inspectors check the ropes on a regular schedule. They look for broken wires, flat spots and rust, and they measure how thick each rope is. A rope that has grown blank 3 has lost metal and strength. One broken wire is usually not a crisis, blank 4 several broken wires close together are a warning sign, and the rope must be blank 5 soon.

  25. Magnets you can switch off

When electric current flows through a coil of wire, the coil becomes a magnet. Wrap the wire around an iron core, and the magnet gets much stronger. This is called an electromagnet, and it has one big blank 1 over an ordinary magnet: it can be switched on and off. When the current blank 2, the pull disappears. Scrapyard cranes use this idea to pick up old cars and drop them where they are needed. The brake on a traction elevator works the opposite way. Strong springs press the brake shoes against a drum, so the brake stays closed blank 3 something pulls the shoes away. While the motor runs, an electromagnet pulls the shoes off the drum so the car can blank 4. If the power fails, the magnet lets go, and the springs blank 5 the brake at once.

  31. A daily truck check

Many companies ask workers who drive a company truck to inspect it before the first trip of the day. The check takes about ten minutes, and it can blank 1 a problem while the truck is still parked rather than out on the highway. Start with a slow walk around the truck. Look at each tire for cuts, bulges and low air. Check under the truck for fresh puddles. A drip of oil or coolant can mean a leak that will keep getting worse blank 2 someone fixes it. Then test the lights, turn signals, horn and wipers. Make sure the load in the back is tied down so nothing can fall out on a sharp turn. A cracked mirror may seem minor, blank 3 it can hide a car in the next lane. If the brake pedal feels soft, report it and do not blank 4 the truck until it is fixed. A breakdown on the highway can cost a whole day, so those blank 5 in the yard are well spent.

  37. Why the sky is blue

Sunlight looks white, but it is really a mix of every color of the rainbow. You can see this when sunlight passes through a glass prism and blank 1 into bands of color. On its way to the ground, sunlight passes through miles of air. The tiny gas particles in the air bounce some of the light off in new directions. They treat the colors blank 2, though. Blue light is scattered far more than red light. blank 3, blue light reaches your eyes from every part of the sky, and the whole sky looks blue. At sunrise and sunset, the sun is low, and its light must travel through much more air to reach you. By the time it arrives, most of the blue has been scattered away. Only the reds and oranges blank 4 the trip, and the sky near the sun glows with them. The Moon has almost no air. blank 5 an astronaut stands on it in bright sunshine, the sky overhead is black.

Questions people ask

Is this EIAT practice test really free?

Yes. The full test, your score for each part and every worked answer are free. You don't need an account or an email address.

Is this practice test the same as the EIAT?

No. It is our own practice test, written to the format NEIEP's study guide shows. The question counts match NEIEP's, 100 in all. The questions and the times are ours.

How long does the free test take?

90 minutes of test time: Reading 30, Mechanical 25 and Math 35, one part after another. We chose these times. Check your test letter for the time your own sitting gives.

Can I use a calculator?

Not in our practice. NEIEP's guide and FAQ give no rule either way, so plan to work by hand. Keep a pencil and scrap paper next to you.

What does "No answer" mean on the math part?

It means none of the other choices is right. Work the question out first, then compare. Pick No answer only when your result matches none of the choices and you have checked your work.

Can I take the test on my phone?

Yes. It works on phones, tablets and computers. The mechanical drawings are easier to see on a larger screen.
