Elevator aptitude test
EIAT test prep
Full EIAT prep costs $35, paid once, for 45 days of timed practice for the elevator aptitude test, from full-length tests down to single topics, plus a printable pack.
If you haven't taken the free full-length practice test, start there. It shows where you stand, and it runs on the same test screen.
What's included
- 3 full-length timed tests, besides the free one
- Each has the question counts of NEIEP, the National Elevator Industry Educational Program: Reading Comprehension 35, Mechanical Aptitude 35 and Mathematics 30, 100 in all. The parts come one after another at the times of our free full-length test, and each part's clock starts when you press its button. No calculator, as in all our practice.
- Each section on its own, and practice by topic
- Take Reading, Mechanical, Math or Tools and measuring as a timed test by itself. Or pick one topic, such as linking words, gears or mixed numbers, and work through questions on it alone, with the clock on or off.
- Diagnostic test and study plan
- A short timed test across every section, Tools and measuring included. Your result gives you a study plan that starts with your three weakest topics.
- Worked answers and review mode
- Every question shows the method, and why each wrong choice is wrong. Review mode keeps every question you missed in one place, so you can work it again.
- Tools and measuring practice
- Our own practice for the tool assessment: what common hand, power and measuring tools are for, reading a tape measure, and adding and subtracting lengths. It is not part of our full-length practice tests. We keep it apart because NEIEP doesn't say where the tool questions go. That is our choice, not a sign that they are a separate test. The tools questions are in words, with no photos of tools. See what NEIEP says about the tool assessment.
- Printable pack (PDF)
- A method sheet that covers every section and the tape measure, printable copies of full tests 1 to 3 and of the tools and measuring tests with answer keys and worked solutions, and a study plan for four, two or one week. The download links work for a year, and the files are yours to keep, unless you take a refund.

Who it is for
Full prep is for you if you have applied to an IUEC elevator apprenticeship and the EIAT is next. You need 70% to pass.
It helps most if you want more timed practice than one free test gives, or if fractions, decimals and equations feel rusty after years away from school.
How our practice differs from the EIAT
The question counts are NEIEP's. NEIEP's 2024 study guide and its FAQ give no time limit for the EIAT, so the times below are ours. Also, NEIEP's 2024 study guide and its FAQ give no calculator rule, and our practice allows none. Your test letter or the recruitment notice may give times. If it does, those are the ones that count.
| Part | Questions (NEIEP) | Our minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Reading Comprehension | 35 | 30 |
| Mechanical Aptitude | 35 | 25 |
| Mathematics | 30 | 35 |
| All three | 100 | 90 |
- On a screen. NEIEP says the EIAT is given on paper. Our tests run on a screen, one question at a time. For practice on paper, print a test from the pack and use its answer sheet.
- Each part on its own clock. One part follows the next. A part and its clock start when you press its button.
- Our own questions. We wrote every question. None is NEIEP's.
Tools and measuring practice
NEIEP's FAQ says correct responses on the tool assessment count toward the final score on the interview. NEIEP's study guide, FAQ and Apprenticeship Opportunities page give no number of questions, time, format or sample for the tool assessment. NEIEP does not say when you take the tool assessment, or whether its questions are part of the EIAT or a separate step. Ask your local, or check your test letter. To be safe, learn the basic tools as you study for the EIAT.
For one local's wording, the Local 126 (Hawaii) notice says applicants also take a Tool Assessment of knowledge of basic tools and their use, and of basic measuring skills. NEIEP's pages do not say whether that is the tool assessment their FAQ names.
Tools and measuring is our own practice for those topics. We did not copy it from any tool assessment. It covers what common hand, power and measuring tools are for, reading a tape measure, and adding and subtracting lengths in feet and inches. Our tools questions are in words: a job with tool names to choose from, or a tool with jobs to choose from. They have no photos of tools. The tape measure questions have drawings. Each of our tools tests has 20 questions in 15 minutes, a format we chose. Take it as a test of its own, by topic, or as part of the diagnostic.
Tape measure questions need the picture. Each one shows a drawn tape with an arrow at one mark, and you read the length at the arrow. The drawing's description can't say where the arrow points without giving the answer away, so a screen reader user can't answer those few questions. How to read a tape measure explains the marks, with drawings and practice.
Every topic, on its own
You can drill each of these by itself, with or without the clock.

Where NEIEP's study guide names a topic, we follow it. For mechanical, the guide names levers, pulleys and gears, hydraulics (area and pressure), and fulcrums and balancing objects of different weights. For math, the guide names arithmetic (the four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages) and algebra (solving equations, manipulating formulas, basic expressions). We grouped the reading questions ourselves, and belts, ramps, tipping and the tools topics are our own. For worked examples, see the EIAT study guide.

Questions people ask
Do I need an account?
No. After you pay, you land on your prep page, and we email you a private access link. Open it on any device to practice.
Is it a subscription?
No. You pay $35 once. Nothing renews, and you are not charged again.
What happens after 45 days?
The online practice closes. The PDFs stay yours, and you can download them again for a year after you pay.
My test is more than 45 days away. When should I buy?
Start with the free practice test and the study guide. Buy full prep when your test date is about six weeks out, so your 45 days cover the weeks before the test.
Is this the same as the EIAT?
No. We wrote our reading, mechanical and math questions to the format NEIEP's study guide shows. They are not NEIEP's questions. The question counts match NEIEP's, but NEIEP publishes no time limit, so the times are ours.
Does it cover the tool assessment?
Tools and measuring is our own practice for it, on common hand, power and measuring tools, reading a tape measure and working with lengths. NEIEP's study guide, FAQ and Apprenticeship Opportunities page give no number of questions, time, format or sample for the tool assessment, so we can't copy its format, and none of our questions comes from a tool assessment.
Can I practice on my phone?
Yes. The tests work on phones, tablets and computers. The mechanical drawings and the tape measures are easier to read on a larger screen. Your progress is saved on the device you use.
Can I use a screen reader?
Partly. Every question, choice and worked answer is text, and each drawing has a short description. The exception is the tape measure questions in Tools and measuring. They need the picture, so you can't answer those few with a screen reader.
Does it cover the IBEW or GAN aptitude test?
No. This prep is for the elevator aptitude test. Those two tests have their own prep: see IBEW aptitude test prep and GAN aptitude test prep.
