GAN aptitude test
Free GAN aptitude practice test
This free GAN practice test has all six sections that programs list, each on its own clock, and no calculator. GAN does not publish how many questions each section has or how long each section lasts, so our counts and times are sized to fit the sitting programs describe: Boston's GAN test takes 3 hours, in person at the JATC. Every question has a worked answer.
No account and no email. Your answers are saved in this browser only. The timer for each section starts when you press Start.
How the free test works
Six sections, one after another, each on its own clock. The counts and times are ours. GAN does not publish how many questions each section has or how long each section lasts, and programs give only the length of the whole sitting: Boston's GAN test takes 3 hours, in person at the JATC, and Louisville says testing lasts about 2.5 hours. We sized each section so the whole test fits that time.
| Section | Questions | Minutes | Choices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 42 | 25 | 4 |
| Numerical Computation | 30 | 30 | 5 |
| Numerical Reasoning | 20 | 22 | 5 |
| Paper Folding | 30 | 30 | 5 |
| Problem Solving | 30 | 35 | 5 |
| Mechanical Reasoning | 45 | 30 | 3 |
The choice counts follow GAN's sample pages: in GAN's sample reading page, each question has four choices, and you pick the one that best completes a sentence about a short passage; in Numerical Computation every question has five choices, answers are exact and not rounded, and fractions are in lowest terms. Its mechanical sample marks three points in a picture, so our mechanical questions have three choices.
Take it in one sitting if you can. It shows how your focus holds up in the third hour, which a short quiz can't.
On the test screen
- One question at a time. The question map lets you jump to any question in the section.
- Flag a question to come back to it before the section ends.
- Hide the timer if the clock makes you rush. It shows again for the last 5 minutes.
- Once you finish a section, you can't go back to it.
- Answer every question. A blank is never right, and many programs rank applicants by score.

What you see when you finish
- Your score for each section and the time you used.
- Every question you missed, with your answer, the right answer and the method.
- Why each wrong choice is wrong. In paper folding, each wrong sheet comes from a common slip, such as a fold left closed or a hole mirrored across the wrong line.
After the free test
- Work on one section. The paper folding guide and the mechanical comprehension guide take the two hardest parts one step at a time.
- Plan your weeks. The study guide has plans for two and four weeks.
- Check your program's rules. The GAN aptitude test overview lists how named programs score the test and when you can retake it.

Questions people ask
Is this GAN practice test really free?
Yes. The full test, your score by section and every worked answer are free. You don't need an account or an email address.
Is this the same as the GAN test?
No. It is our own practice test, written to the format GAN's sample pages show. GAN does not publish how many questions each section has or how long each section lasts, so we chose the counts and times ourselves. The questions are ours, not GAN's.
Why does this test have six sections when my program lists five?
Some programs list six sections: reading, numerical computation, numerical reasoning, paper folding, problem solving and mechanical comprehension. Others list five, without problem solving. If your program lists five, skip the Problem Solving section or treat it as extra arithmetic practice.
How long does the free test take?
About three hours with short breaks, close to the sitting at Boston, where Boston's GAN test takes 3 hours, in person at the JATC. You can stop between sections and come back on the same device.
Can I use a calculator?
No. At the programs that say so, calculators are not allowed. Keep paper and a pencil next to you. Every question here can be worked by hand.
Can I take the test on my phone?
Yes. It works on phones, tablets and computers. Paper folding and mechanical drawings are easier to see on a larger screen.
